Before Europeans arrived, what is now South
Australia was home to more than 10,000 people with more than
50 different languages.
NATURAL WORLD
Adelaide is spread out on both sides of the Torrens River.
PARKS
In 1837 Colonel William Light laid out broad streets with city
parks. The Botanic Gardens,
established in 1855, are located along the Torrens River.
The Pioneer
Women's Memorial Garden is a tribute to the pioneer women of
South Australia. The main entrance is located on King William Street
between Torrens Parade Grounds and the rear of Government House.
The sloped path to the entrance is grass.
Adelaide is famous for its spring flower displays in city gardens
from September to November.
The Waite
Arboretum occupies 30 hectares and contains about 2,200 specimens
representing more than 800 species in 200 genera, all growing under
natural annual rainfall of 626 mm. The property was bequeathed to
the public and has a gobsmacking history as recounted on Bush
Telegraph.
WATER
The Adelaide metropolitan area is dependent upon the Mount Lofty
Ranges and the Murray River for water.
In town the Aquatic
Centre has been a popular swimming center since 1969.

The city has many restored Victorian and Edwardian buildings.

The Art
Gallery of South Australia offers a walk-through of Australian
history. The gallery is located on leafy North Terrace between the
South Australian Museum and the University of Adelaide and was established
in 1881, only forty-five years after the first European settlers
arrived.
Contemporary Art Center of South
Australia
The South Australian Museum
is home to the largest collection of Aboriginal artefacts in the
southern hemisphere.
Established in 1869, the Central
Market is one of Adelaide's best-known landmarks.
SPORTS
Adelaide is the home of two Australian Football League teams: the
Adelaide Crows and Port Power. A local Australian rules football
league, the SANFL, is made up of nine teams from around Adelaide.
NEARBY
Kangaroo Island is located at the Gulf of Saint Vincent. Visitors
can walk among the seals at Seal Bay.
The Flinders
Ranges is the most extensive mountain range in the state.
WEATHER
Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate, where most of the rain falls
in the winter months. Of the Australian capital cities, Adelaide
is the driest.
