POLITICS
Costa Rica has one of the most stable democratic governments
in the Americas.
HISTORY
1502 – Christopher Columbus anchors in the Bay of Catiari
(today's Limón). Columbus names the land between Honduras
and Panama 'Veragua')
1821 - After Guatemala declared its independence from Spain,
Costa Rica begins creating its own government. It briefly is
annexed to Mexico, then becomes state within the Central American
United Provinces.
1987 President Oscar Arias Sánchez wins Nobel Peace Prize
GEOGRAPHY
Costa Rica is bordered to the north by Nicaragua, to the southeast
by Panama, to the west and southwest by the Pacific Ocean and
to the east and northeast by the Caribbean.
GLOBALIZATION
Baseballs used in the United States' major leagues are sewn
by hand in the town of Turrialba.
TOURISM
Costa Rica attracts far more international visitors than its
Central American neighbors.
