Mexican
War of Independence - The Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821),
which started on September 16, 1810, was Mexico's struggle for independence
from Spanish colonial rule. It started as an idealistic peasants'
rebellion against their colonial masters, but finally ended as an
unlikely alliance between liberales (liberals) and conservadores
(conservatives).

SEPTEMBER
September is known as 'Mes de la Patria' or 'Month of the Nation'
as cities gear up to celebrate Independence Day (September 16).
There are patriotic and colorful festivities throughout the country.
PRESIDENTS
José
María Morelos - a priest and insurgent who led the independence
movement in Mexico from the death of Miguel Hidalgo in 1811 until
he was tried by the Inquisition and executed in 1815. Morelos was
born into a poor family in Valladolid, since renamed Morelia in
his honor. The family house is today a museum dedicated to his memory.

Victoria - Born José Miguel Ramón Adaucto Fernández
y Félix in the state of Durango,
served as the first President of Mexico from 1824 to 1829. After
the overthrow of Emperor Agustín de Iturbide, he became the
first president of the new country Victoria chose his new name for
symbolic significance: Guadalupe to give thanks, to what he claimed,
the protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Victoria which means
Victory.
