| Te Wiki o te Reo Maori
(Maori Language Week) 2010 takes place July 26 - August 1 with the
theme 'Te Mahi Kai – The Language of Food.'
Planeta.com encourages Maori friends to share their language and
non-Maori to consider the week an opportunity to explore indigenous
New Zealand.
Among our favorite channels: Te
Ahi Kaa from Radio New Zealand
and the videos from Maori
Television.
BACKGROUND
Every year since 1975 New
Zealand has celebrated Maori Language Week, a time to recognize
te reo Maori (the Maori language) and to integrate Maori phrases
in daily life.
Planeta.com pays attention
to indigenous culture around the world and encourages the development
of multi-lingual dictionaries and innovative use of the Web to conserve
indigenous languages.
COMMENTS
This is so fantastic to have a guy encouraging an indigenous language
on the other side of the world... the world needs more of you Ron.
A note on the experience in New Zealand (Aoteoroa) of Maori Language
week. All media has a greeting in Maori to start (a Mihi at the
start of the news for example) and when the weather forcast is broadcast,
the names of the cities and regions are in the original Maori nameof
that area. This week has lifted the profile of the Maori langauge
so much and we are really happy that it has been so well published
this year. - Tuisong1
