Welcome to Rio (pronounced ‘Heeoo’ by locals).

Located on Brazil’s Atlantic coast, Rio de Janeiro was the country’s capital between 1763 and 1960 and is the country’s second largest city.

NATURAL WORLD

The world’s only urban forest is located in Rio. Its area of 3,300 hectares encompasses trees, belvederes, caves and waterfalls in Tijuca National Park. In fact, nearly 20 percent of the city (325.6 km2) is covered with vegetation, from Atlantic woods to mangrove swamps.

CULTURAL WORLD

The Statue of the Christ The Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is perched on Corcovado Peak.

The Villa-Lobos Museum, Rua Sorocaba, #200, is dedicated to Latin America’s most celebrated composer.

TRANSPORTATION – Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport (code GIC, better known as Galeão International Airport) is 20 kilometers from downtown.

The Central Station, or Central do Brasil, serves local commuter rail lines.
