Protected Areas of Latin America and the Caribbean Congress 2019

Poster

This week (October 14 to 17, 2019) Lima, Perú hosts the third edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Congress on Protected Areas (CAPLAC 3). The theme is “Solutions for well-being and sustainable development.” Hashtags: #caplac, #CongresoÁreasProtegidasLAC

Previously held in Santa Marta, Colombia (1997) and Bariloche, Argentina (2007), the Congress is a forum for sharing experiences, academic research, and debate on public policies. The event arose as an initiative of IUCN and its World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), bringing together societal actors to strengthen their capacities as a means of promoting protected areas as nature-based solution to the challenges facing society.

The Congress offers opportunity for government authorities, multilateral organisations, leaders of local, traditional and indigenous communities and the private sector to present approaches that will be brought before the Convention on Biological Diversity when the Aichi Targets are reviewed in 2020.

Given interest in sharing its debates and conclusions at IUCN global events, the Congress must also incorporate The Promise of Sydney (emanating from the World Parks Congress 2014) and bring a regional position to the next World Conservation Congress in 2020.
