Sri Lanka, is an island country in the northern Indian Ocean off the southern coast of the Indian subcontinent in South Asia. Known until 1972 as Ceylon Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest across the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait and the Maldives to the southwest.
Bombs ripped through churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, killing at least 290 people and injuring hundreds. Targets included the upmarket Shangri-La hotel in the capital, Colombo. At least 39 of those killed in the explosions were identified as tourists from countries including the United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia and India. On top of the heavy loss of human life, the attacks could cause serious damage to Sri Lanka’s economy, which depends on tourism.
