The Völklingen Ironworks is located in the German town of Völklingen, Saarland, Germany.

2019
In 2019, the site celebrates a quarter century of the Völklinger Hütte UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. To open the season on Sunday, April 14, 2019, the site launches the 5th UrbanArt Biennale featuring 120 works by 100 artists from 20 countries across 4 continents.

History
In 1873, Julius Buch began planning of a steel works near Völklingen on the banks of the Saar river. However, this planned work was not completed. In 1881, Carl Röchling began new construction. Two years later the first smelter began operation. The plant closed in 1986.

World Heritage
On 17 December 1994, the Völklinger Hütte World Cultural Heritage Site sensationally became the first purely industrial monument to be included in UNESCO’s List of World Heritage Sites. It is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
